Reports say Google's YouTube
is in talks with some video producers over possibly charging for content on the
video-sharing site.
Ad Age reports the company is
asking the producers to submit applications to create pay channels, which would
initially cost between $1 and $5 per month.
Executives of the company
have openly discussed such plans before.
The move would open a new
revenue stream for YouTube and the producers, but it would be a first for the
site.
YouTube has drawn many
viewers, particularly younger viewers, away from television, offering free
content.
Google in the past year and a
half has invested heavily in content production for the site, to better compete with cable and other content options.
