Regulators in the U.K. have fined Sony Corp.'s U.K. unit 250,000
pounds ($394,100) for failing to prevent hackers from attacking its PlayStation
Network.
The U.K. Information Commissioner's Office said Sony could have prevented the breach.
"If you are responsible
for so many payment card details and log-in details then keeping that personal
data secure has to be your priority," David Smith, ICO's deputy
commissioner and director of data protection, said in a statement.
"In this
case that just didn't happen, and when the database was targeted – albeit in a
determined criminal attack – the security measures in place were simply not
good enough."
The April 2011 attack
compromised more than 100 million customer accounts.
Sony suspended the related
services in July and budgeted 14 million yen ($155 million) in costs that year.
Sony has said it will appeal
the decision.
