Sony Unveils Slim PlayStation 3

Sony on Wednesday unveiled two new, super-slim versions of its PlayStation 3 video game console.

One version will feature a 500GB hard drive and sell for about the same price as the previous model, which had 320 gigabytes of storage.

A second, smaller model will have 12 gigabytes of flash memory.

The new models are less than half the size and weight of Sony's original PlayStation 3 in 2006.

The new launch comes amid heavy competition in the gaming console market, from devices including Microsoft's Xbox and now also a new Nintendo console, the Wii U, which goes on sale in the United States on Nov. 18 and in Europe 12 days later.
